Spiritual Practices for Times of Change
Planet Earth is going through a transition period where for many of us discomfort has been raising to the surface.
In the Andean cosmology this time was foretold and referred to as the “Pachacuti” or the time when the world turns upside down. It involves profound change in human consciousness and the way we as people relate to The Earth.
There are other instances of ancient civilizations recounting times of profound change including the Popol Vuh the Mayan sacred text.
During times of uncertainty it becomes more important that ever before to prioritize your self-care and to make space to soothe your nervous system.
You many feel constantly being overwhelmed with information and can sometimes experience “FOMO” or fear of missing out or the 24/7 connection lifestyle. In reality your nervous system wasn’t created to be constantly “online”.
When was the last time you took time for yourself? I don’t mean a salt bath but going deeper, like doing a life inventory, planning for the next 3 years of your life for example.
Really take into account your self-sabotaging patterns, the current state of your relationships and your overall health (physical, mental and spiritual). See image below.
Do you feel calm and centered? do you experience anxiety or repetitive thoughts keep you up at night?
What is your soul calling you to do right now? to heal, to let go of?
How can you contribute to the wellbeing of the world at this time?
“ We can change the world with every thought we have and every word we speak.”
― Alberto Villoldo
THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
Your spiritual practice is your own way of connecting to the divine or looking for guidance and feeling a sense of ease.
It can look something like this:
- Walking meditation
- Daily prayer before going to sleep or in the morning when you wake up
- A gratitude list naming 10 things for which you are grateful for every day
- Guided meditations with an App such as Headspace or Insight Timer
- Keeping a journal
- Pulling an oracle card
SPENDING QUIET TIME AND NOURISHING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Every week allocate time to spend by yourself or plan a few hours without your phone
- Surround yourself with friends and family that support your wellbeing and dreams
- Have healthy boundaries with coworkers and friends, honor your time and energy levels
- Find people with similar interests, join a group, volunteer etc.
BENEFITS OF HAVING AN ACTIVE SPIRITUAL PRACTICE:
- Having a spiritual practice can help you to feel recharged, expanded and replenish your resilience making it easier to cope with life’s challenges.
- Also it can assist in feeling grounded, safe and more capable to navigate difficult emotions.
“The True Self is infinite. It knows no boundaries. Pure essence. Pure light. Engulfing the mind, the soul, the body, the invisible real, with its radiance.”
― Alberto Villoldo
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS TO HELP YOU DURING TIMES OF EMOTIONAL TURMOIL:
Create a sand painting:
Collect items from nature that represent some of the emotions you are feeling (sticks, stones, crystals, etc.)
Find a quiet place in nature or your home and place them in a circle, just allow yourself to flow with the practice placing them as it feels natural to you.
You may feel the need to shift some items around to move the energy
Sit and observe your sand painting, you may keep it for a few days. If you make it outside sometimes Mother Nature will move certain items (the wind, a squirrel) notice how you feel after dismantling your sand painting.
